Description
This W. & L.E. Gurley Transit and Compass of Troy N.Y., with R. Seelig & Sons of Chicago with original wooded boxes. The “transit” takes its name from its ability to rotate or transit the telescope through 180 degrees of arc. The lower motion clamp or tangent screws are evident directly above the four screw-leveling heads. Constructed of finely aged brass this century old instrument exhibits a degree of precision that is still the standard by which other surveying instruments are judged. The images are crystal clear. I have never seen another instrument of this type that was as well preserved and it is in completely functional condition. The wood compass case does have some degree of aging is cracked but the transit wood box is fine. All of the knurled adjusting knobs move freely and with authority. The compass swings freely and it is graduated in one half degree divisions. It has a five-inch compass needle. The circle and face of the compass are near mint The spirit levels are placed at angles to each other as to level the plate and are balanced upon a pivot underneath the middle of the two so as to be adjusted. The levels are both in perfect working order. There is also a nine-inch level on the transit in perfect working order. The transit can be used for almost any project (even today) encountered by the practicing surveyor. There is natural, tarnishing from aging which we have elected not to remove. You decide when you are the owner and we know that you would like to be. These pieces have been dated 1852 by the senior member of Gurney Instruments museum. The dimensions of the transit are 24" with the lens extended; the compass measure 15" across it's longest length. It is truly a piece of early American history and it can be yours. Payment may be cashiers check, or personal check and we will ship when it clears. Shipping will be 110.00 within the continental United States and must be paid by the buyer.
