SURVEYING INSTRUMENT BY S & D DOD MENDHAM NJ

AN EARLY BRASS PROTRACTOR WITH MARKING ALADADE AND ATTACHED PARALLEL RULES MADE BY S. & D. DOD, MENDHAM, N.J. FOR S.S. BEACH. CIRCA 1780-1815. A BEAUTIFUL SURVEYING INSTRUMENT IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. AS FOUND UNPOLISHED. ABOUT 4" TALL BY 12" LONG. THIS IS ONE OF 2 DOD INSTRUMENTS WE ARE CURRENTLY OFFERING ON EBAY. THIS ONE IS SOME WHAT DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER DOD INSTRUMENT. WHEN TURNED OVER THERE ARE STEEL CONNECTORS ON THE SWING OUT ARMS THAT HOLD THE PARALLEL RULE. THE BOTTOM PHOTO SHOWS THE DETAIL OF THIS FEATURE. DANIEL DOD IS THE SON OF LEBBEUS DOD (1739-1816) OF MENDHAM WHO ESTABLISHED AN ARMORY FOR THE MANUFACTURE AND REPAIR OF MUSKETS AFTER HE HAD SERVED AS CAPTAIN OF ARTILLERY. WASHINGTON DETACHED HIM FROM ACTIVE DUTY TO DEVELOP THE ARMORY. PRIOR TO THE WAR HE HAD BEEN WELL ESTABLISHED AS A CLOCK MAKER AND MAKER OF SURVEYING INSTRUMENTS AND HAD ALSO WORKED AS A SURVEYOR. A. DOD AND S. DOD ARE BROTHERS OF DANIEL DOD (1778-1823) A MATHEMATICAL AND MECHANICAL GENIUS WHO BUILT STEAM BOAT MACHINERY. KILLED IN 1823 IN AN EXPLOSION OF THE STEAMBOAT "PATENT" IN THE EAST RIVER DURING A TRIAL RUN. ONE OF THE DOD BROTHERS WAS ALSO A SILVER SMITH. THIS IS ONE OF TWO INSTRUMENTS BY DOD WE ARE OFFERING ON EBAY. PLEASE SEE OUR OTHER LISTINGS FOR ANOTHER FINE INSTRUMENT BY A. DOD.
