Description |
It is a pleasure to offer this stunning antique W. & L.E. Gurley Patinated Brass Surveying Transit in its Original Gurley wooden box with leather carrying case (the case is rubbed with one side panel of cover missing, but other than that is solid and sturdy) with Original 36" (extandable to 63") wooden and brass tripod (marked on the metal ring W. & L.E. Gurley; Troy, N.Y., USA". Also included are metal plumb bob, small screwdriver, a thin metal rod and a shading attachment to prevend sunlight from getting into the view. Not being experts we are not certain of the functions or what is important in the description so please ask if you have specific questions. The base of the transit consists of the compass (with wonderfully engraved letters and "W.& L.E. Gurley, Troy, NY". Overall the instrument is in Very Good Working (to the best of our knowledge) order. The compass needle turns freely, and the three bubble levels are intact. The lenses will need cleaning: we can see some dirt when looking through, but there are no scratches (we did not want to take a chance on cleaning them, and decided to leave it to people who are more familiar with transits). One locking knob shaft is slightly bent; it's noticeable only when turning the knob and still works fine. There is some brassing to the patinated parts. Because of picture loading time constraints we only posted 3 pictures with this listing. Please let us know if you would like to see more enlargements of various parts of the instrument.Looking through the scope towards a light source, we notice that the scope does indeed have measuring crosshairs-they are thin dark lines, as opposed to the white markings one might see on a modern reflex camera.
Also, training the scope on a bookshelf about twenty feet away, we were able to get a sharp image of a book title, so we would say that function is working correctly. There are 2 focusing knobs; one for the eyepiece and the other extending the large end.

On Mar-29-00 at 19:40:32 PST, seller added the following information: We had several inquiries regarding transit's serial number. Unfortunately we do not know where to look for one on the instrument. We have carefully examined the transit and the only numbers that we could find are "487" on the underside of the base and also number "10" on the underside next to the plumb hook. We do not know if any of these are serial numbers. Perhaps a more knowledgable eBay user will provide us with further information on where to find the serial number which we will promptly add to the listing. Thank you again. Michael.

If you're the seller or the high bidder - now what?
Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the
winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and
where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for
the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when
payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the
winning bidder and the seller.
If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days, the seller may contact the next highest bidder. Therefore, if the high bidder does not contact the seller within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
