Description |
A scarce early and very large EDMUND DRAPER brass transit, comes in original walnut dovetailed box and leather strap,Draper made transits in the mid 1800s and this unit has 4 screw head shifting base so should make it pre 1859,i don,t see a serial number also so that should date it pre 1860,there is a number in the star on the dial and it maybe a serial number it is 399,one website seemed to say that that they had a serial numbered model number 208 and this was the earliest number they had seen so if this has no serial number it would of course be a earlier version, that article also seem to imply that draper and stancliffe made a transit also, generally it is believe draper made the first north american transit.I really don,t know much about these so not sure how accurate my above statements are so please feel free to fire some questions at me if it helps you to place this model. What i do know is this transit was used in the fort walsh area of saskatchewan and alberta when they first surveyed these provinces(back then it would have been a territory called Assinaboia)Later it was used when the canadian pacific pushed their railway across canada.Transit stands a foot tall, glass dial is 5.5 inches across and unit is 8 inches across base, unit weighs over 10 lbs, face of dial is very nice, cabinet or box is made to lock but key is gone, tripod has brass head and one leg have been shortened for some reason,a great item in great condition. It is a great piece of early canadiana but then again what early transit is not an item of historical importance........30.00 north american shipping.
