Description
You are bidding on a W.&L.E. Gurley Surveyors pocket vernier compass in excellent condition. It comes in its original mahogany dovetailed box with the original label on the inside of the lid, as well as the original key and tripod. The compass still retains the original lacquer finish on brass. The compass has 2 full vials set into the face. The compass needle measures 4 1/2” long and moves freely. The silvered face is in excellent condition with the North Star and W & LE Gurley engraved below this. The folding sight vanes have a half slit half wire sighting arrangement, when they are folded to meet at the top the telescope may be attached by using 2 milled head screws to attach the telescope. The vanes show a small amount of freckling to the lacquer but this is minor. The optics in the telescope are fine with 3 stadia hairs still present, the focus knob works fine. The telescope has a full silver circle divided into degrees and has a silver vernier reading to 5 minutes. The vial on top of the telescope still retains fluid but the bubble is too large and a fine crack can be seen this crack is not new. The vial could be replaced if it bothered the new owner but it looks fine for display. The compass mounts on a spindle with a clamp and tangent as well as a piece that attaches to the bottom that will accept a Jacob’s staff. There is a nice tripod that is original to the compass that comes with it. The tripod does have a small amount of damage on the top of one of the legs (see photo) as well one of the nuts on the back of one of the legs is missing (see same photo). There is no plumb bob or screwdriver. The inside of the box is lined with purple velvet the box still retains most of its original finish and is in very nice condition. This is a rare and desirable Gurley instrument. I have a reserve that is reasonable for this instrument. Buyer to pay actual shipping + insurance, Please see 16 photos. Personal checks must clear before I will ship. And I reserve the right to relist if ebay crashes in the last 2 hours of the auction. Thanks Dave.
