Description

EARLY 19TH CENTURY LEATHER BOUND SURVEYING BOOK!

A very interesting early leather-bound SURVEYING book --- 3rd New York edition --- printed in 1806 --- authored by ROBERT GIBSON --- FAIR condition!!! As you will note from the photos, this early 19th Century book's leather bound cover has an early repair to the spine. The book is divided into the following sections:
Section I - decimal fractions, the square root, geometrical definitions, theorems and problems; with the use of the tables of logarithm numbers, sines, tangents and scants.
Section II - plain trigonometry, right and oblique angles with its application in determining the measures of inaccessible heights and distances.
Section III - an account of the chains and measures used in Great Britain and Ireland and a particular description of the several instruments used in surveying.
Section IV - methods of finding the areas of maps from their geometrical construction.
Section V - concise method of determining the areas of surveys from the field notes, or by calculation than any hitherto published.
Section VI - the nature of off-sets and the method of casting them up by the pen, application of enlarging/diminishing/connecting maps, variation of the compass by amplitudes and azimuths, map scaling, dividing lands.
The rear section of the book contains mathematical tables and thirteen (13) foldout copper engraved plates. All of the pages are intact, and in good condition, with the only problem being folded corners. A previous owner glued some OLD additional printed sheets of book or newspaper pages on available blank pages. Included in this information are what appear to be four (4) early whale oil burning miner's lamps (see 5th photo). This will make a great addition to your early surverying of scientific instrument collection! Satisfaction guaranteed! Buyer pays s/h/i – PA residents pay 6% sales tax.
