Description
Founded in 1871, BERGER INSTRUMENTS was a Boston, Massachusetts based manufacturer of high quality surveying instruments. My father, Donald Dodge was Vice President of BERGER until his retirement in 1986. He gave me several items over the years, including this BUFF & BERGER Dumpy Level that appears to have been refinished but is still in very good overall condition. Via e-mail (and by sending photos), I have had it authenticated and valued by an expert dealer in antique surveying instruments. I was told that this piece should bring in excess of $1,000.00 because of it's history and it's low serial number -- because it's been refinished, the information is very faint, but it reads "BUFF & BERGER, BOSTON, 55". The dealer who appraised it told me that this piece and another I have (serial #58) are the lowest known serial numbers he is aware of! He said he can't be sure of the exact year of manufacture, but he said it would be either 1871 or 1872. I've been having trouble posting photos on e-bay, but e-mail me and I'll be happy to send photos. **** UPDATE (06/14/00) **** I was notified today by someone who had requested photos of this instrument that it is not a Dumpy Level but is actually a more desirable and valuable Wye Level. The man told me that a Wye Level has a removable scope that sits in a hinged "Y" shaped bracket that can be opened and the scope rotated or removed. This describes my level, so apparently it's a Wye Level and not a Dumpy Level. Sorry for any confusion. ****************************************************************************
