Description |
19TH c. NY Surveying Vernier Compass, VG+Signed by engraved script on the silvered compass face, "W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy NY. This nice example of a late 19th century surveyor's vernier compass incorporates a 15~½ mainplate with two working level vials, an engine-divided silvered needle ring with a 6 magnetic needle, a variation index with a slow-motion tangent screw with graduated arc and opposed vernier, an outkeeper counter (used to tally chains measured), sight vanes, (one with swing-away peep sights), ball and socket mount and the original tripod and case.
This represents the largest example of vernier compass made by this 19th century New York firm. The condition of the outfit is very good, the compass retaining much of the original bright lacquer finish, and the original hand-dovetailed walnut case retaining the original trade label.
An uncommon opportunity to purchase a near complete (missing only the plumb-bob) 19th century surveyors outfit in very nice condition

On Jul-05-00 at 12:38:44 PDT, seller added the following information:Thank you for your questions: There is overall light surface wear (light scratches) to the compass finish, and the silvering on the dial has (very) minor areas or discoloration. A majority of the original lacquer is present. This compass dates from prior to 1885. This is evident from the type of tangent screw which is used which has the directly-threaded and is top-mounted on the plate. Those models made after 1885 used spring opposed tangent screws which were mounted under the plate. This particular label is an early label which was discontinued in the 1890s. The reserve price is under $1700. Thank you.
