Description

* Pre-1850 ENGRAVED Surveying Vernier COMPASS * This early, large and very heavily built American surveying vernier compass has a bright brass surface and is signed by engraved script on the silvered and decorated compass face, “E. A. Kutz New York”. The compass measures 15~5/8” in length and is fit with a 6” needle and 7~ 3/8” sight vanes, a variation ard and slow motion tangent screw and two opposed bubbles mounted on the main-plate. The original staff mount is lacking; the original case is present and in good condition as is the original heavy lathe-turned lid.

Erasmus A. Kutz Sr. was born in 1778 and is first listed in New York City from 1818 to 1820 and again from 1842 to the year 1850, when he moved to New Jersey at he age of 72. He is listed as a maker in New Jersey until 1856. His son, Erasmus A. Kutz Junior was also a compass and rule maker and made instruments in New York from 1850 to 1864. Many of the compasses made by the Kutz family are well known for their elaborate and beautifully engraved faces. I believe, due to the weight and construction of this compass, that it is the product of E.A. Kutz Senior.

The engraving on the face of this particular Kutz compass incorporates grape vines, leaves and bunches of fruit within a large band surrounding the needle hub, with an additional decoratively-engraved floral fleur-de-lis at the North position. A very nicely decorated, pre-1850, New York surveyor's vernier compass, for the serious collector, cased and in very good condition. * A copy of information on the Kutz family will accompany this compass to the new owner.
