Description
After recently finding this old transit rummaging through a curbside trash pile, no trash pile will ever look the same to me again. Actually I started when I was only four years old living in Jacksonville, Florida where someone had thrown out 30 or 40 old books on the curb. I remember getting my little red wagon and filling it with the old books and I went door to door through the neighborhood and sold everyone of them. I used the money (I think around $12.00) and bought my mother a spank’n brand new coo-coo clock. That was back in the 50’s. OK, Folks I’m not positive of what I have here but I have a good idea after doing some research on the Internet. I showed this to a surveying person and he basically told me what it was and that got me started researching. I found a great web site www.surveyhistory.org.com if you have never looked at this site your missing out, IT’S GREAT. There’s not much I can tell you about this old transit. I figure if your looking at this you already probably know what I have. I can say it focuses well and the cross hairs are intact. The balance level bubble thing looks fogged up. The top glass is broken but really shouldn’t be that difficult to replace. Of coarse this thing is solid brass except for the glass pieces. The brass has tarnished or as some may say has a wonderful patina. The brass face plate under the glass is in excellent condition, although in the photos it looks like it may have scratches on it but they are fine cob webs from little spiders getting through the cracked glass and making a web. Every thing written on the top brass plate under the glass is fine engraved. There are no serial numbers anywhere. I really think this could be one of the first transits Young ever made. Please take time to look at all my photos. I have tried to give you every angle possible so you can make a good determination exactly how old this thing is and it’s condition. After removing all the exterior cob webs and bug remains it really looks as if it’s in near working order. All the brass adjustments and knobs work great. The compass dial thing turns and seems to work great too. I really don’t think it would take much to restore it. Hopefully a Museum will buy this because it is truly a piece of our history and it would have been a shame if it were lying at the bottom of the county landfill. A little elbow grease I bet you could get this thing shining like a new silver dollar. If you have any questions or comments on this very, very old transit, drop me a line. I’d love to hear from you. Thanks and Good Luck! BUYER TO PAY S/H/I
