Description
EARLY FORM GURLEY SURVEYORS TRANSIT

W. & L. E. Gurley Surveyors Transit, mfg. between 1886 and 1908, no serial number, in superb condition. Telescope length = 11.5 in.; main plate diameter = 7 3/4 in.; horizontal limb diam. = 6.5 in.; flat wire wound compass needle with minor oxidation, length = 5 in.; vertical limb calibrated 82 degrees each way from zero and with a precise vernier. Optics are clear and sharp from edge to edge with crosshairs present. Focusing is smooth and firm. This instrument features an uncommon optional gradienter on the right standard - used for direct calculation of elevations. The beautiful silvered compass face is engraved ornately in script in an arc above the North fleur-de-lis = W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy, New York. There is no damage or missing part of which I am aware. Extraordinarily clean throughout noting only that the telescope tube has some minor blotches in the patina which will remove easily if you prefer to do so. Case is in fine condition and contains plumb bob, sun shade, lens brush, tools and tags. Additional pix can be taken if needed.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS: I welcome questions, but you must Email me before bidding, allowing sufficient time for a reply. Buyer pays UPS shipping costs - est. at $25.00, plus any insurance desired and, if requested, the cost of professional packing. I will make contact immediately after auction closes and expect an email reply within 48 hours - payment within 7 business days. M/O gets immediate shipment. Checks must clear unless I am satisfied with Buyers feedback. Auction may be cancelled if eBay malfunctions in last 2 hours of sale. Please do not bid unless you intend to complete the transaction on these terms. GOOD LUCK BIDDING.

In answer to many questions: For some reason, I have been unable to post a photo of the nice box for this transit. I have also had trouble sending the pic by Email! Please be assured that this case is the original, fitted case of Gurley quality, has brass corner protectors, the original, working leather strap handle, and only normal wear from usage; no damage-- the nicest Gurley case I have seen - and I have seen quite a few. Key is missing, however. ALSO - yes, I think this transit was probably cleaned by a former owner some years ago when optical instruments became outmoded and it was intended for display only from that point on. The blotches on the scope tube seem to be from handling since that cleaning and appear only on the tube. I can't prove this but it makes sense to me - how about to you?

PLEASE NOTE - A PICTURE OF AN 18 INCH BUFF & BUFF LEVEL IN A CASE WAS INADVERTANTLY POSTED TO THIS LISTING TOWARD THE BOTTOM OF THE DESCRIPTION .. PLEASE IGNORE THIS PICTURE - IT WAS SUPPOSED TO GO WITH ANOTHER LISTING AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO REMOVE IT. SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENENCE. HOW EMBARASSING!!
