Description
RARE W. & L.E. GURLEY 7 IN. SURVEYORS COMPASS

A superb example of a large 1852 - 1880 Gurley surveyors compass with an outkeeper, vernier that is not silvered, swing-out peep sights on the south vane and tangent scales on the side of the north vane. Complete with compass cover, mounting swivel post and fine fitted case. 7 inch silvered compass face is in great condition, flat 5 7/8 inch needle with wire-wound balance and with the company name ornately engraved above North, and Troy, N.Y. engraved at South. Plate length - 15 1/4 inches, vanes 7 3/4 inches high, compass box 7 inches in diameter, 4 1/2 inch tangent screw, 2 1/4 inch and 2 3/4 inch active spirit levels, outkeeper registering up to 16 chains. All adjustments work smoothly and everything seems to be as it should be. I note the following VERY minor detractions: the outkeeper indicator is an ornate arrow rather than the usual disc-type; case strap and one of the closure hookeyes are absent; no key; wooden toggle that secures the vanes inside the box is split lengthwise. I think the photos represent the piece fairly.

MY TERMS: If I have left anything out or if you have any questions, please email me before bidding, allowing sufficient time for a reply. I will answer you if I can. Buyer pays shipping costs, insurance and the cost of any professional packing requested. I will make contact immediately after auction closes and expect an email confirmation within 24 hours - receipt of payment within 7 business days. M/O gets immediate shipment. Checks must clear unless I am satisfied with Buyers feedback. Auction may be cancelled if eBay malfunctions in last 2 hours of sale. Please do not bid unless you intend to complete the transaction on these terms. Please, no international sale except Canada - I’ve had too many problems elsewhere. GOOD LUCK BIDDING.

Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller.

If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
