Description
This is "The Makers of Surveying Instruments in America Since 1700" by Charles E. Smart, 1962, with 182 pages. Smart was then Chairman of the Board of Directors of the W.& L.E. Gurley Co., Troy, N.Y. This is a rare softbound version of the original first printing of this highly sought-after book. The softbound copies are heretofore unknown and likely limited in number. They might have been reserved for complimentary distribution because this one is accompanied by a personal letter from Mr. Smart to an individual who furnished information on a particular compass. The letter, on Smart's personal letterhead, is included with the book. The bottom half of the one-page letter is shown below in one of the pictures. A second volume to this book was published in 1967, and Mr. Smart died in 1973. His treatise is highly regarded by both collectors and historians as the standard reference work in the field. Despite several attempts by various individuals to have this work reprinted this is unlikely to occur due to copyright problems. The book is in very good condition except for fading to the spine and light scuffing to the edges. The cover appears to be cardstock covered with a plasticized crinkle finish. California residents add 7.25% sales tax. Cashier's check or money order preferred for quicker shipment. A personal check is OK but item will be held for check to clear. Additional search words: compass, transit, level, plumb, theodolite, alidade, survey, surveyor.

Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller.

If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
