The 200+ Year-Old Compass was made by Thomas Greenough at Boston, New England in the mid-1700's . It is actually an early surveyor's compass. Greenough Sr. was born in 1710 and died in 1785. Thomas Greenough Jr. was born in 1738 and died in 1775. The compass is lacking a pair of sight vanes which would have fit into the square holes at each end of the arms. A similar compass is part of the Alder Planetariums collection of early surveying instruments. Successful bidder will pay by cashier's check actual shipping costs and insurance.
