Description

~ Large 1870's GURLEY Vernier COMPASS, Complete ~

Large 1870's GURLEY Vernier COMPASS, Complete ~

A good mid-1870s vernier compass signed by hand-engraved script on the silvered face, "W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy NY". The compass measures 15~1/2" in length with a 6" needle. The variation index and vernier are outside the compass box and adjustable by directly threaded tangent screw. Opposed bubbles fit the opposite side of the compass. The leveling base is an uncommon form of compound tangent screw with circular worm endless-screw operation; a step up from the typical ball and socket form. Note too the early ball-form socket and spring mounted button release. The accompanying tripod fits the compass threads but I believe dates from a bit later than the compass. The New York firm of W. & L. E. Gurley began to employ the use of an engraving machine in the late 1870. This compass is hand engraved as was done on all the earlier Gurley instruments.
The condition of the compass is good with a nice patina and the case is complete with a nice coat of 19th century red paint; the case too retains the original trade label of W. & L. E Gurley. A great early surveying outfit, complete and in good condition. (The walnut base display board will also accompany the instrument).
