Description

~RARE Ca 1885 POCKET RAILROAD COMPASS, VG~

A Rare Gurley near-Miniature Pocket Railroad Compass CA-1885 with non-hinging removable sight vanes, each 6" tall, (note the thumb screws are specific to the vane. One screw has a longer shaft allowing clearance at the slow motion tangent screw side). The compass has a 3~1/2" needle, a rack & Pinion variation setting and a single vernier to the 5~1/2" limb. The compass is fit with a lock and slow motion tangent screw on the recording motion and has a ball and socket leveling head with both the tripod and the staff socket.

Typically, this form of Gurley Railroad compass is fit with folding sight vanes. I have seen one other early Gurley RR compass with these types of sight vanes; they were most likely special order instruments possible for mining applications. This is a very nice early compass, much smaller than typical and complete with the original case accessory-base and tripod. The compass retains most of the original gold lacquer finish.
