Description (revised)
Buff & Berger Survey Transit with box and tripod ser# 2279. Buff and Berger broke up in 1898 forming Buff & Buff and C. L. Berger and sons. Legend has it that a woman who became a love interest for both Buff and Berger caused the break up of the company. This instrument dates prior to the 1898 date as both names are on the compass dial. This instrument is in good working order with all spirt levels, cross hairs, and mechanical parts intact. I have used this instrument to survey my property in Glen Ellen, CA. It has the correct collapsible tripod. The tripod has an old repair to one of the legs that appears to be very old as the patena matches the rest of the tripod. The box has a broken hinge which is typical for an instrument of this age. The instrument was used in Ohio as it has a label from the J. C. Ulmer Company in Cleveland Ohio. This is a good working instrument. Telescope is 11" compass is 5".
