About
this item:
This is a beautiful surveyor's transit
by Buff & Buff serial number 28783 with a patent number that
dates it to around 1928. It belongs to a retired surveyor who has
had it for at least 50 years.
It was once coated in a black
protective coating which has been stripped and the entire piece was
cleaned so that it is now a very attractive piece of brass to
display in your home or office - see last photo. I believe it is in
good working condition.
There is a nice wooden tripod with a
brass plate that the transit is mounted on to. The tripod also has
sturdy cast iron feet. The transit is stored in own box. This also
has a brass plate to rest the transit on before sliding it into the
box. The box latches shut and has a leather strap to carry it
by.
I believe the tripod and wooden box were refinished also.
I have included a photo of the item as it appeared years ago.
I am not too familiar with this type of item, so I have
taken many photos so you can see its condition.
The transit
box about 16 ½"x11"x9" and has nice dovetail and tongue and groove
construction. The leather strap looks as if it was replaced, it's
nice and new looking. There are two metal Buff plates on the top of
the box inscribed with their information and the owner also has a
metal plate with his name inscribed, this he may decide to remove
before shipping.
On the door inside the box is a holder for
maybe three tools, I don't know what these tools are - there is one
smaller screwdriver hung there. There are also some papers glued
inside the box with information pertaining to the transit (some
instructions and other info). They have been there a while and may
have come that way from the manufacturer.
There is a keyhole
on the door of the box to lock it shut, I'll have to check with the
owner to see if he has the key.
There is also a nice plumb
bob in leather holder marked Dietzgen. The plumb bob looks like it
is chrome plated steel (point is not chromed). The reel it is hung
from is a plastic Gammon Reel and may be a replacement reel. I don't
see any markings on the plumb bob itself.
There are also two
items that look like loupes and may be made from black plastic or
bakelite. The glass is scratched quite badly on both. I'm not
exactly sure what their pupose is, but they are in the box.
The transit itself is about 13 ½" tall and the scope (don't
know correct term) is about 10 ½" long.
The compass face
reads: Buff (inside diamond) Buff & Buff Mfg. Co. 28783 Boston
Pat. 1674317.
The only thing I can see that I might call a
flaw is one of the two glass panes that are on either side of the
compass has been replaced and it is plastic. The other is still
glass and probably original. There are some chips on the rim of the
plate that holds the compass, but they don't affect the overall
appearance or how well this item performs. All moving pieces move
smoothly.
On the wooden piece that the transit sits on while
stored in the box there is also a round brass piece that looks to
fit over the sight end, perhaps in bad weather or sunny conditions
for shade?
There are three levels and all look good. Perhaps
the fluid is cloudy? It may have always been that way, I've no
idea.
The scope is very powerful, I don't know the
magnification. The lenses can probably be cleaned. They are a bit
spotted, but not too badly.
I don't believe any pieces are
missing. This is very nice item.
If you have any
questions you can e-mail us and I will do my best to answer them, or
call the owner and get back to you.
It will need to be
shipped in two separate packages - one for the tripod and one for
the box and transit. Shipping costs will be determined by zip code
and will probably be between $25.00 and $60.00 - the higher end
being for those of you out west. The tripod adds a bit because of
its length - it is considered "oversized".
