Description |
Gibson's Surveying, 1798
A Treatise of Practical Surveying; Which is Demonstrated from its First Principles
The Eighth Edition, with Alterations and Amendments adapted to the Use of American Surveyors
by Robert Gibson, New York, 1798
The whole illustrated with (13 folded) Copper Plates
This is an early American version of Gibson's Surveying containing 296 pages of text and 156 pages of tables. The work was first published in Dublin in 1739 and the first Americanized version was printed in 1785 in Philadelphia. Gibson's Surveying was a dominant American text for a half century, and the standard against which others were compared. It appeared on the American scene when there was a need for what it offered, particularly in regard to calculating land areas from metes and bounds surveys. Despite several additions and changes by American editors, it never included descriptions or instructions on newer instruments such as the vernier compass, solar compass, or surveyors transit. Its heyday came and went, and it nobly served the needs of many pioneer American surveyors.
Today works like Gibson's Surveying continue to serve professional surveyors by providing insight into alternative measuring methods used in early metes and bounds surveys. A book review of the work appears in the website of The Compleat Surveyor.Click here for the Gibson Book Review
The exterior leather binding is intact although showing scuffing to the edges and a few small holes on the upper spine and front hinge. There are attractive old former owners signatures to the front fly leaf. The text is complete although the front portion from the title page to page 48 is held by a single thread. The plates are complete although plate 9 has a long tear and plate 13 shows edge loss to the lower portion. There is light foxing to the text and moderate foxing to the plates. Some of the leaves and plates have curled edges. All in all this is a nice copy of a rare early work.
