Description

Jess's Surveying, 1814

A Compendious System of Practical Surveying, and Dividing of Land: Concisely Defined, Methodically Arranged, and Fully Exemplified.
Second Edition Improved.

by Zachariah Jess, Philadelphia

This is another of the early American surveying texts that helped define the nation's lands. It was not as widely used as the ones by Gibson, Flint and Gummere and is much harder to come by. This is the second and final edition of Jess's Surveying, the first edition of which appeared in 1799. Jess was a schoolmaster in Wilmington and apparently taught surveying. He felt the existing texts focused too much on the theory and offered few examples, and he wanted to change that. His book focuses on the mathematics of surveying and is complete with numerous examples and illustrations. The second edition offered here adds the Pennsylvania Method of solving a D.M.D. area calculation, and finding the variation of the compass instrument by both the amplitude and azimuth methods. These both involve making solar observations. A book review of the work appears in the website of The Compleat Surveyor.Click here for the Jess Book Review

Size is 5.2" x 8.3" with 227 pages of text plus 154 pages of tables. The book is divided into 30 sections including the usual geometry and trigonometry plus sections on heights, distances, inaccessible boundary, division of land, offsets, enlarging maps, surveying with the chain only, etc. The leather binding is intact although showing scuffing to the edges and cracking of the front hinge and part of the rear hinge. The interior content is unmarked although there is the usual foxing to the paper. All in all a nice copy of a very old surveying reference work.

California residents/recipients add 7.25% sales tax. Domestic book rate shipping where available is $2.00. Insurance, priority mail or international shipping is available at extra cost. Insurance is optional although recommended as seller will not be responsible for lost, damaged or misdirected packages once mailed. Cashier's check or money order preferred for faster shipping. Personal check OK but item held until check clears. Search words: survey, surveyor, surveying, chain, transit, theodolite, alidade, level, compass, plumb.

Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller.

If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
