Description

A Treatise on Surveying Containing the Theory and Practice,
Carefully Revised, and Enlarged by the Addition of Articles on the Theodolite, Levelling, and Topography

by
John Gummere, The Fourteenth Edition, Philadelphia, 1843

Gummere's Surveying was first published in 1814 and became one of the major surveying texts of the 19th century. The author wrote the book to provide schools with a basic text that contained numerous examples of surveying problems. Gummere felt that the writings of contemporary authors Gibson and Jess were inadequate for school work because they lacked these working examples. The earlier editions of Gummere failed to include treatment of leveling practice and the theodolite instrument and they appear here in the 14th edition for the first time.

The book is 5.6" x 8.9" with 266 pages of text and 152 pages of tables plus 11 plates. It is in good condition except for some foxing to the leaves as typical, lacking the blank front flyleaf, improper folding to all plates and lacking plate 10 (illustrating a level) and much of plate 9 (illustrating a theodolite). Xerox copies of these two plates from another book will be furnished. The leather cover is in good condition except for some scuffing to the edges.

A book review of the work appears in the website of The Compleat Surveyor. Click here for the Gummere Book Review

The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller.
