Description

A Manual of the Principal Instruments Used in American Engineering and Surveying
by
W. & L.E. Gurley Co., Troy, N.Y., 21st edition, 1874

This is the popular and authoritative GURLEY'S MANUAL that contains a price list and descriptive information on the use and adjustment of surveying instruments. There are 234 total pages. Coverage includes the solar compass; solar attachment for transits; plain and vernier compasses; tripods and Jacob's staffs; railroad compass; pocket vernier and plain compasses; miner's compass (Norwegian Needle); vernier transit; engineers transit; surveyors transit; wye levels of 16 to 22 inch lengths; dumpy levels; Locke hand level; Philadelphia, New York and Boston leveling rods; aneroid barometers; Gunter, engineers, vara, Philadelphia (Wing), and Grumman link chains; Chesterman's and Paine's tapes; and more. There is also a full line of drafting supplies and tools.

This is an original copy in green boards with gold lettering. The covers are in remarkably good shape although the inside string binding on the top portion of the book is loose or broken. The bottom strings are good. There is a red moisture stain along the bottom edge of most of the pages as seen in the pictures. Otherwise this is a nice copy of an early edition of this popular collector item. The instruments shown are early models, such as transits with the straight A-shape standards before the bend was added to the legs. The telescope attachment for compasses reaches completely across the instrument and connects to both of the vertical sighting vanes.

The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller.
