Description

Heller & Brightly Surveying Instruments
1889

Remarks on Engineers' Surveying Instruments

by Heller & Brightly, Philadelphia

The firm of Heller & Brightly of Philadelphia produced quality surveying instruments from 1870 to the 1940's. They won many prestigious awards for their products and were highly regarded by professional surveyors and engineers. Charles Heller had originally worked for William Young and the two were partners when Young died in 1870. In that year Heller formed a new partnership with Charles Brightly.

They first issued their Remarks form of catalog in 1874. It differs from those of their competitors in that there are relatively few illustrations. They focused on combining useful information for the surveyor with written descriptions of the many instruments. The instruments offered by the company included conventional transits and levels, plain and vernier compasses, tunnel transits, solar transits, mining & reconnoissance transits, and plane table alidades. They also carried a line of tools and supplies.

Heller & Brightly instruments had particularly nice optical qualities and their catalog includes test results showing that for comparative length telescopes their instruments could be used at 50% greater distances than ones by Gurley.

Size is 5.8" x 9.0" with 42 + 19 pages plus several inserts and three folded plates. Condition is generally good although one of the plates has a tear across much of its width as seen in the last picture. Several of the pages near the front and rear are chipped at the edges and the inside paper on the rear hinge is separated. The cloth on the front outer hinge has 1-inch tears at both the bottom and top but otherwise the book is pretty decent.

California residents/recipients add 7.25% sales tax. Domestic book rate shipping where available is $2.00. Insurance, priority mail or international shipping is available at extra cost. Insurance is optional although recommended as seller will not be responsible for lost, damaged or misdirected packages once mailed. Cashier's check or money order preferred for faster shipping. Personal check OK but item held until check clears. Search words: survey, surveyor, surveying, chain, alidade, compass, plumb.

Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller.

If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
