Description
A good 19th century American surveying vernier compass signed by engraved script on the silvered compass face, "W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy NY". The instrument is complete in the original case with original label intact. Note the label depicts the Gurley manufactory prior to the building of the attached facade; this is one of Gurley's earlier labels.

This, one of Gurley's larger compasses incorporates a 6" blued magnetic needle, a 15" mainplate with variation index and directly-threaded tangent screw, vernier, an outkeeper (for tallying chains measured) and two original opposed level vials. The leveling base is a rare form with a slow motion tangent screw (the spindle was bent and has been cleaned to appropriately fit the compass socket) and a staff type socket.

One of the two sight vanes is fit with two swing-away peep sights and a scarce telescopic attachment, also signed Gurley and dated pat July 9, 1878, will fit the other sight vane.

The compass, telescope and box are in very good condition, the compass retaining much of the original lacquer and the telescope retaining the original finish and both the lens cover and shade.

An uncommon 19th century compass, with a scarce telescopic attachment, complete and in very good condition.
