Description
~Uncommon SURVEYING Transit , Amer. 1870 VG+~

An uncommon form of surveying transit, dated “1870” and signed by hand-engraved script on the silvered compass face, “W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy N. Y.” The original box retains a good early label depicting the Gurley manufactory.

The instrument with 11” telescope with full vertical circle and three adjustable level vials. The limb with two verniers and the compass box with a variation index and 5” needle. Early features include enlarged objective lens cell and exterior focus tube on the telescope, directly-threaded tangent screw on both the horizontal and vertical recording motions, and opposed tangent screws on the lower (non-recording) horizontal motion. The 4-screw leveling base (these many times missing) is removable from the instrument and stows inside on the side of the box.

A most uncommon feature of this instrument is the attached sight vanes which mount on the telescope and may be folded flat when not in use. This was an accessory offered by the Gurley firm but in 25 years of collecting I have only seen 3 instruments with these uncommon feature (this accessory actually much more uncommon than the solar attachments). Certainly these sight vanes were used to enable the instrument operator to quickly align the instrument with the chainman, and/or, take quick bearing readings typical of preliminary types of surveys; an interesting transitional feature from the earlier surveying compass to the later developed transit instrument.

As is evident from the images, the instrument is in beautiful condition with good motions all around, perfect compass box silvering and a beautiful original patina which has been cleaned and waxed. The instrument is complete with the original dovetailed case, including lens-cover, plumb bob (not showing) and the original tripod. A very nice example of a 3rd quarter 19th century American surveying transit in beautiful condition, complete and including uncommon features.
