GURLEY SURVEYORS COMPASS, PRE 1880 WITH POLE. I FOUND THIS COMPASS AND A GURLEY TRANSIT OF THE SAME VINTAGE IN THE SAME ESTATE AND BOTH ARE BEING OFFERED ON EBAY AT THIS TIME. CHECK MY OTHER AUCTIONS. THE COMPASS LOOKS AS THOUGH IT HAS NEVER BEEN OUT OF THE BOX FOR BEING THIS OLD. TROY N.Y. IS IN THE SOUTH POSITION AND W.L.E.GURLEY IS IN THE NORTH POSTION(THERE IS NO LETTTER "N" FOR NORTH ON THE COMPASS FACE). THE COMPASS NEEDLE IS 6 INCHES LONG. THE FRAME IS 15 1/2 INCHES LONG WITHOUT THE SITING VANES ATTACHED. BOTH VANES ARE THERE. ONE VANE HAS TWO PEEP SITES THAT CAN BE ROTATED IN OR OUT OF THE SITING SLOTS. THE OTHER VANE HAS DEGREE MARKS ON BOTH EDGES. THE PART THAT ATTACHES THE COMPASS TO THE SUPPORT POLE HAS A PLACE IN THE BOX BUT HAS BEEN KEPT ON THE POLE AND HAS A DARK PATINA AS SEEN IN THE PICTURES. THE POLE AND ATTACHMENT IS 57 INCHES LONG FROM TIP TO TIP AND HAS A STEEL TIP ON THE OPPOSITE END TO THE COMPASS ATTACHMENT END. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF PAINT DRIPS BUT OTHERWISE IT IS IN GREAT CONDITION. THE DOVETAIL BOX IS IN GOOD CONDITION WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A CRACK IN THE WOOD ACCROSS THE FRONT OF THE TOP, AN EASY REPAIR THOUGH. THE STRAP IS BROKEN BUT ALL OF IT IS THERE. CHECK, MONEY ORDER, PAYPAL OR BILLPOINT ACCEPTED. SHIPPING AND INSURANCE PAID BY THE SUCCESSFUL BIDDER. WILL SHIP AFTER CHECK, PAYPAL, OR BILLPOINT CLEARS.
