Description |
This fine transit is one of only a few known "Pre-1862 Surveyor's Transits". It was made by William Schmolz, a San Francisco maker, who was in business from about 1853 to 1891. It is signed "William Schmolz San Francisco" in script on the compass face. Note that there is no serial number. These special instruments were constructed so that the compass card and needle ring remain stationary when the transit is rotated in azimuth with the lower plate clamped. It is believed this design evolved from Burt's 1840 solar compass, in which the solar apparatus was aligned with the meridian using the lower motion. This type of transit was also referred to as a "Theodolite Compass". This instrument is one of only three known Schmolz "Surveyor's Transits". William Schmolz also invented an improvement to the Burt solar attachment in 1867, which was used by Gurley on their instruments, and for which they paid Schmolz a royalty. This example has a 10 3/4" erecting telescope with a 6 1/4" spirit level. The compass needle is about 4 3/4" in length. The horizontal limb reads to one minute on the vernier, and the vertical arc reads to three minutes with an angle range of 50 degrees each way. A very rare and desireable piece for the serious collector. Note that the box as well as the tripod with levelling head are missing. Payment by money order preferred. Shipping in the continental U.S. is included; actual shipping cost outside the continental U.S., to be determined after close of auction.
