Description

A. Lincoln With Compass and Chain by Adin Baber

This is the classic work documenting the life of Abraham Lincoln as a land surveyor. This aspect of the former president's early life is only touched upon in other biographies. The book was written by an ardent survey-historian Adin Baber, now deceased. It was published in 1968 and has been out-of-print for many years. Included are 8 drawings by one of the country's leading Lincoln artists, Lloyd Ostendorf. The drawings vary in size up to a full page at 8 1/2" x 11". There are in addition 24 plats and 37 photographs including a picture of Lincoln's actual surveying compass and chain.

Lincoln's surveying practice involved the retracement and subdivision of government public lands plus the locating and laying out of towns, roads, private lots and subdivisions. This was done during the period 1834 - 1836. Among the many surveys discussed is the tale of how Lincoln might have skewed a line to avoid running through someone's house.

The book is ex lib with white ink catalog numbers on outside spine, a large rubber stamp on the blank back of the frontispiece, catalog numbers in ink on the reverse side of the title page, and pasted date due slip and half envelope for the checkout card inside the back cover. Fortunately there are no markings to text or pictures.

California residents add 7.25% sales tax. Cashier's check or money order preferred for quicker shipment. A personal check is OK but item will be held for check to clear. Search words: transit, level, plumb, survey, surveyor, theodolite, engineer.
