This vernier
transit was manufactured by C.L. Berger & Sons of Boston, Mass. and has
a patent date of April 28, 1896. (SN #7378). This is a direct 1 minute
reading vernier and maybe interpolated to 30 seconds by the experienced
user. This precision surveying instrument is in good condition. The viewing
glass covering the "B" scale is cracked. The frosted vernier shield over the
"A" scale is missing. The magnetic compass and all tangent clamps and screws
seem to be in working order. All three levels have good bubbles. The
standards are showing age wear from normal usage. The wooden dovetailed
carrying case with leather handle strap shows age. Paper label on inside of
door contains the serial number and a date of 5/20/38.
