Description

Very Old W & L. E. Gurley Brass Compass Level
If the image does not display, please keep trying or try again a little later - we are experiencing intermittent host problems. Sorry!

Very old surveying instrument. Solid brass construction. W & L. E. Gurley, Troy, New York. Base of instrument has female threaded hole (about 3/8" diameter) for mounting on tripod (not included). Instrument consists of a five-inch diameter precision compass body with an outer ring graduated in degrees, plus also the cardinal points of the compass. Body incorporates two small levels positioned 90 degrees apart for aligning instrument on tripod (tripod not included). Compass is in good condition, the lock knob functions, the needle indicates properly and the two glass level vials are intact and work well. Azimuth angle of sighting telescope can be adjusted using a thumbscrew which actuates a small wheel. A long level is integral to the scope This level has its glass vial broken. The optics of the scope are extremely fuzzy, plus a rattle can be heard from the interior when the instrument is tilted. It sounds like a single very small piece that is loose inside. There is a blank hole on the side of the scope, where nothing is attached, and also a shallow ding about 3/8 inch in diameter in the right side of the scope barrel. One of the two vertical scope supports incorporates a hairline slit about 3 inches long, for sighting purposes. Overall, the instrument shows much signs of usage, age and neglect. We're not too familiar with instruments like this, so please e-mail if you have any questions. Shipping weight 6 pounds. Winning bidder to pay exact UPS shipping charges from zip 92604.

Winning bidder to prepay.
