Description
**SEE PHOTOS** Up for auction is this lovely old surveyor's transit made by Gurley. Comes in a wooden case with leather strap, case measures 10" wide, 12" high, 6 3/4" deep and is in remarkably fine condition for its obvious age. The case is hinged on the back and the front has two brass hook closures as well as a keyhole. Inside the lid are two labels: the first says "Established 1845, W. & L.E. Gurley, Manufacturers of Civil Engineers' and Surveyors' Instruments, Troy, NY, USA". The other label is very faint and speaks of stadia measurement, distance, and other technical terms. Handwritten on this label is the number 251, and 823/1000, indicating that this is a numbered piece. Tucked and stored inside the case are several tools, which are laid out for you to see in one of the pictures. The transit itself is beautiful, heavy and brass. From what I can tell, everything looks to be in excellent condition. There are at least 3 liquid levels, lots of knobs and screws, glass is intact, etc. Everything moves freely. This is so lovely, it would be nice to display. I've been advised that this starting bid is quite low, so go for it and good luck! Buyer to pay actual shipping with insurance, and I will pack this precious antique very carefully and will ship within 24 hours of receipt of payment. PayPal, money order/cashier's check accepted (no personal checks), with payment to be received within 7 days of auction's end. I am no expert, but will do my best to answer any questions you may have. Thanks for looking!
