Description
18th CENTURY WAYWISER

Probably AMERICAN, circa 3rd quarter 18th century, unsigned, total length including the wheel 35 1/2" long, featuring a mahogany dovetailed gear box 4" x 4" x 4" with a readout dial 2 1/4" in diameter, glazed face with a hand drawn dial, a 1 1/4" needle, instrument readout from 0 to 320 on the outer rim in Arabic with the inner ring showing Roman numerals 1 through 7, eight spoke 12 1/2" iron rimmed wheel with brass finial and original iron cog pin, 26" bentwood fruit handle; an American waywiser.

This ranks among the rarest of survey instrument collectibles. Few museums or private collections have examples of waywisers. The name comes from the Greek word "hodometer" meaning "way measure". These devices were used in place of chains to measure perimeters of land and roadways. The concept was originally devised in England in the early 18th century. We believe, after noting the construction details and wood types used, that this particular model was most likely made in Colonial America by a local clock maker. The instrument still functions remarkabley well (no, we have not calibrated it for accuracy) and is complete noting a crack in the bottom case housing and several superficial cracks elsewhere. Several of the screws are later replacements (probably several times over). The needle shows some rust and the dial minor staining. The instrument box, wheel, and all of the wood, carries with it a fine patina. The size of this unit is particularly attractive due to its "miniaturization" for its time. This instrument is complete and must be considered in absolutely spectacular conditon for its age and rarity (even noting the considerations we have mentioned).

This is for the serious collector of survey instruments.

Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller.

If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
