Description

Antique 157 Year Old Handwritten Journal

What we have up for auction is a very unique piece of Americana. The first section of this book, a boarding school workbook journal, shows the discipline and attention to fine detail by a young student, named Joshua Miller. 1843 (before the Civil War) is when this journal begins, while attending the Line Lexington Boarding School in Line Lexington, Pennsylvania. This 157-year-old handwritten school journal contains lesson exercises in Trigonometry and Surveying, show the problems and then his solutions.
We can’t begin to describe the book so we took lots of pictures, which still does not show the work that went into this book. The “art work”, we consider the penmanship (calligraphy) artwork and the attention to detail make it hard to appreciate the hours of work that went into these pages. Since the mid-19th century is when metallic pen nibs first started to be use, this may have been written with a quill pen, but there is no way to verify this. The Journal also shows the frugal ways of the family. The journal when Joshua no longer needed it, was than used by his father, who most likely had a store, to keep account records, than his Mother made use of it for her recipes. So what you have here is 3 in 1; a journal of school work surveying kept by a student in boarding school, a ledger of accounts kept by his merchant father and a recipe book used by his mother. There are about 70 pages containing Surveying & Trigonometry problems, Rules and Exercises and approx. 40 pages containing Account lists and recipes. There are some blank pages remaining in the book.
This would make a wonderful gift for a Math. Teacher, Surveyor or Engineer. This book would also be appreciated by anyone who loves the lost art of beautiful penmanship and calligraphy. The pages are large, approx. 7˝ inches wide by 12 inches long, and would be suitable for framing. Keep in mind the beginning school section of the ledger is very neat and penmanship beautiful, the remaining portion used for ledgers and recipes was written in a normal working hand and varies from neat to sloppy. Within this book are some clippings, lists and a receipt dated 1899. Besides cake and cookie recipes there are recipes for “Remedy for Wounds” and “Cough Syrup”

Excerpts:

“Remedy for Wounds - Take a shovel or pan put hot coals on & sprinkle some brown sugar upon them & hold the wound over it a few minutes.”

The prices in the ledger reflect a time long past, 1 Dozen Eggs - .16, 1 lb. Coffee - .28, Tobacco - .10
Condition – The cover shows the wear you would expect to see on a 157-year-old book that was well used. Most of the pages have detached from the binding, which looks like it was hand sewn. The pages are in very good condition given the age, some corners are rounded or bent, some small tears at edges of some of the pages, but only one page is totally separate and in bad condition. There is some foxing on some of the pages.
