Description

Rare English Surveying Book from the 1850's

It took 30 years of collecting old surveying books for me to come up with my first copy of The Art of Land Surveying, Explained by Short and Easy Rules; Particularly Adapted for the Use of Schools by John Quested, Surveyor. The treatise was first published in 1843 and this is a copy of the undated 3rd edition with 26% more content, including the added treatment of the plotting scale. There are previous owner's signatures dated 1857 and 1859 so that gives some indication of date. It is nicely illustrated with several diagrams and a foldout plate. Size is 4.5" x 7.5" with 121 pages. The content includes instruction in surveying with the chain and states that the iron pins used with the chain should be so stout as to be almost fit for bolts. Stations were cut sticks prepared by a good strong pocket-knife. While not intended as a guide for the professional surveyor performing complex surveys, it serves to inform students and apprentices of the nature and technique of surveying. Condition is good noting the soiling on the front cover.

Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller.

If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
