Description |
I'll do the best I can to impart what little I've been able to find out about this instrument. It is a Bausch & Lomb Optical Co's. Surveyor's Transit manufactured in Rochester, N.Y. sometime between 1906 to early 1908 according to the research librarian for the B&L corporation. The 1908 B&L catalog offered this instrument in the dove-tailed box, with tripod for a mere $285. I do not have the tripod, but the original wood box and yes the original leather strap have survived and are included. The number 9080 is stamped on the compass face below the patent dates of 1903 & 1906, don't know if it's a serial or model number. All the scales are legible but could use some cleaning. The glass and crystal is perfect, no cracks, no liquid leaks. The levels are all perfect and holding. The two base levels are actually set under the crystal face of the compass so they've probably never been exposed. This instrument was the top of the line at the turn of the last century and when you begin adjusting the fine tuning knobs and other adjustments it is literally amazing how smooth all the action is. There is no way for me to show you how fantastic these optics are but suffice it to say the modern instruments don't hold a candle. The crosshairs are all intact, 1 vertical, 3 horizontal, and do appear to be spider silk. This was going to be my next project but time and needs do change. The winning bidder will pre-pay actual shipping and insurance costs so please remember that this item is heavy (solid brass) and will come in the original wood box packed carefully into a shipping carton. If you are bidding from outside the U.S. be prepared to arrange your own shipping after funds have cleared. GOOD LUCK....HAPPY BIDDING!!!
