Description

BRASS L. BECKMANN TRANSIT LEVEL COMBINATION NO. 11169 WITH B. K. ELLIOTT WOODEN CASE, TRIPOD, AND EXTENDABLE MEASURING/LEVELING STICKS - WORKS GREAT!

UP FOR AUCTION IS THIS VINTAGE TRANSIT-LEVEL FROM THE L. BECKMANN CO. OF TOLEDO, OHIO. THIS HEAVY TRANSIT IS CONSTRUCTED ALMOST ENTIRELY OF BRASS. THIS INSTRUMENT COMES WITH ITS WOODED CASE FOR TRANSPORTING, ITS ORIGINAL TRIPOD, AND ITS EXTENDABLE 10 FOOT MEASURING OR LEVELING STICKS.

THE L. BECKMANN TRANSIT IS IN GREAT WORKING CONDITION WITH NO CHIPS, CRACKS, OR DAMAGE. SOME OF THE BLACK PAINT ON THE SUPPORT ARMS AND TELESCOPE HAS SOME SCRATCHES AND IS RUBBED OFF ON SOME OF THE AREAS. THE TELESCOPE IS IN GREAT CONDITION WITH BOTH END GLASS PIECES, CROSSHAIRS, AND GRID IN EXCELLENT VIEWING CONDITION SHOWING CLEAR AND SHARP. THE TELESCOPE AND 3 BUBBLE LEVELING ASSEMBLIES ARE IN GOOD WORKING CONDITION WITH THE BUBBLES MOVING FREELY AND CORRECTLY IN THEIR TUBES. THE HORIZONTAL COMPASS MEASURES ABOUT 7 1/2" IN DIAMETER AND WORKS FREELY AND THE NUMBER SCALES SHOW CLEARLY. THE COMPASS IS MARKED "THE L. BECKMANN CO. TOLEDO, O., U. S. A." AND IS NUMBERED "11169". ALL THE BRASS LEVELING AND ADJUSTING SCREWS WORK FINE. THE INSTRUMENT IS ABOUT 11" TALL AND FITS ONTO A WOOD BASE THAT SLIDES IN-AND-OUT OF ITS WOODEN CASE.

THE TRANSIT-LEVEL COMES WITH A WOODEN DOVETAILED BOX THAT MEASURES 14 1/2" BY 9 1/2" BY 9 1/2". THIS WOODEN BOX WAS CONSTRUCTED BY THE B. K. ELLIOTT COMPANY OF PITTSBURGH, DETROIT, AND CLEVELAND. A METAL TAG IS MOUNTED ON THE TOP OF THE BOX MARKED "B. K. ELLIOTT COMPANY". SEVERAL PIECES OF ADVERTISING PAPER AND INSTRUCTIONS ARE STAPLED OR PASTED ON THE INSIDE OF THE CONTAINER. THE TRANSIT WAS PROBABLY TRANSPORTED PERIODICALLY TO THE ELLIOTT COMPANY FOR RE-CALIBRATION. ON THE INSIDE OF THE BOX THERE IS THE GUIDES FOR THE TRANSIT BASE TO SLIDE INTO AND REMAIN IN A FIXED POSITION. THE CASE HAS 2 WOODEN PIECES ATTACHED WHERE A SCREWDRIVER AND THE BRASS SUN SHIELD FOR THE TELESCOPE IS KEPT. THE BOX HAS A LEATHER HANDLE ON THE TOP AND 2 SWING HOOKS FOR HOLDING THE DOOR CLOSED. THERE IS A LOCKING MECHANISM FOR THE DOOR BUT THE KEY IS MISSING. THE CASE DOES SHOW WEAR WITH MULTIPLE SCRATCHES, MARKS, WEATHERING, AND SOME SOME PAINT SPOTS, BUT STILL IS VERY STURDY AND HOLDS THE TRANSIT FIRMLY IN PLACE.

THE TRANSIT-LEVEL COMES WITH ITS ORIGINAL WOODEN TRIPOD MEASURING ABOUT 60" IN IT UPRIGHT STATE. THE WOODEN ROUNDED LEGS DO SHOW USAGE CAUSED BY WEATHERING AND DO HAVE SOME PAINT STAINS. THE TRIPOD COMES WITH ITS METAL END TIPS (TO SECURELY ANCHOR IT IN THE GROUND), BASE PLATE, WING NUTS. A LEATHER STRAP THAT HELD THE LEGS TOGETHER WHEN TRANSPORTING IS ONLY HALF THERE. THE INSTRUMENT COMES WITH AN EXTENDABLE (UP TO 10 FEET) MEASURING OR LEVELING STICKS. THE GUIDE SLIDE AND CLAMP ON THE STICKS WORK FINE.

THIS IS A GREAT OLD BRASS TRANSIT-LEVEL COMBINATION FROM THE "THE L. BECKMANN CO." WITH IT ORIGINAL CASE, TRIPOD, AND MEASURING/LEVELING STICKS IN GOOD WORKING CONDITION TO ADD TO YOUR CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT COLLECTION OR EVEN USE.
