Description

ANTIQUE BUFF MASTER TRANSIT+BOX+GURLEY TRIPOD

THIS IS A WONDERFUL TRANSIT IN ITS ORIGINAL BOX WITH TRIPOD FOR ONE MONEY. THE DOVETAILED WOOD BOX IS APRX 16" X 9" X 11". THE TRANSIT IS A PAINTED BLACK METAL AND BRASS INSTRUMENT AND READS ON THE COMPASS FACE -- BUFF & BUFF MFG. CO. 26965 BOSTON PAT 1674317. (THAT PATENT DATE IS FROM 1928). THE NUMBER "26965" ALSO SHOWS UP INCISED ON THE WOOD SLIDING BOARD, HAND WRITTEN ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE WOOD BOX, AND EMBOSSED INTO THE LEATHER STRAP, SO LOOKS TO BE MATCHING. INSIDE THE BOX ARE 3 PAPER LABELS - ONE ON THE DOOR IS THE INSTRUCTIONS AND GIVES THE PLACE OF REPAIR AS: JAMAICA PLAIN STATION, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, HENRY A. BUFF, M.I.T., PRESIDENT. ANOTHER LABEL ON THE INSIDE LEFT WALL IS A "CAUTION" LABEL REGARDING ADJUSTMENTS TO THE TRANSIT. THE LABEL ON THE BACK WALL OF THE INSIDE TELLS YOU HOW TO PACK AND SHIP CORRECTLY SHOULD THERE BE A NEED FOR REPAIRS AND ALSO REFERS TO THIS TRANSIT AS -- BUFF MASTER TRANSIT INTERNAL FOCUS. (THERE IS ALSO A NEWER (60s?) FOIL LABEL ON THE INSIDE DOOR FOR - R.L. SARGENT CO IN HOUSTON, TEXAS). ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX THERE IS A LARGE ORANGE "BUFF" PAPER LABEL ON THE BACK, A SMALL "BUFF" PAPER LABEL ON THE FRONT AND A METAL TAG THAT READS - BUFF, BOSTON, MASS. MASTER CRAFTSMAN, PRECISION LEVELS, TRANSITS THEODOLITES ALIDADES. THERE IS ALSO WHAT'S LEFT OF A PAPER SHIPPING LABEL ON THE TOP OF THE BOX. THE TRANSIT ITSELF IS AFFIXED TO A WOOD SLIDING BOARD THAT ALLOWS IT TO BE REMOVED FROM THE BOX. IT UNSCREWS FROM THE BOARD SMOOTHLY AND ATTACHES TO THE TRIPOD JUST AS SMOOTHLY. THE TRIPOD HAS BRASS WING-NUTS THAT TIGHTEN FINE, RED FLAKY-PAINT WOODEN LEGS AND METAL 'SOCKS'. IT IS APRX 5' TALL AND READS ON TOP -- W. & L.E. GURLEY, TROY, N.Y., USA, PATENT 1641592.  (THAT PATENT DATE IS FROM 1927).  THE TRIPOD LEGS HAVE CRACKS HERE AND THERE BUT VERY STURDY.  I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS OR IS NOT WORKING ON THE TRANSIT, I AM NO EXPERT, BUT ALL THE GLASS IS CLEAR AND NOT CRACKED, THE EYEPIECE MOVES EASILY, I CAN SEE A FAINT IMAGE LOOKING THROUGH THE EYEPIECE, ALL THE BRASS KNOBS WORK AND SEEM TO BE ACCOUNTED FOR, AND THE LEVELS HAVE THEIR BUBBLES AND SEEM TO BE ABLE TO 'LEVEL'. THE ONLY BOO-BOO I SEE WITH THE TRANSIT IS THAT THE LEATHER CARRYING STRAP IS WEATHERED AND BROKEN. THE TRANSIT IN THE BOX WEIGHS ABOUT 31 POUNDS SO CONSIDER THE SHIPPING COSTS.
