Description
19th C. Gurley Transit

AMERICAN, circa 1870, signed, "W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy, N.Y.", with batch number 18 in various parts, featuring an 8" base plate, with a 5 3/4" compass with a silvered face, two bubble levels in good working order, opposing 1 arcmin verniers, and a 4 3/4" needle, dual rack and pinon focusing for the cross hairs and for the objective on a 12" telescope, standing 12" high, all brass construction, complete with it's carrying case and 56" high original tripod, a transit.

This Gurley Transit was a high quality instrument listing new for $180.00 (135 years ago). This instrument was furnished without a bubble level mounted on the telescope, and I quote from the orignal Gurley manual which states that a bubble level and access clamp can be purchased for this scope, "though the majority of engineers prefer an instrument with plain telescope, like the one shown in the engraving". The instrument is with its fruitwood box measuring 13" x 9" x 12 1/2", showing it's age but in very solid shape, including both catches and the lock (no key). It retains its lens shade, lens cap, and all parts are original. The instrument has obtained a very nice patina and still retains much of its gold colored lacquer. The compass dial is in very good condition showing great detail in the engraving and shininess in the silver.

This complete set is in very good original conditon, never having been attacked by a buffing wheel or loaded up with black paint.

Each period Van Cort Instruments will be auctioning a variety of optical treasures and other products we manufacture. Take a look around our site for what's up next.

Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller.

If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
