Description |
Beautiful 19th-century brass transit theodolite manufactured in America. The maker’s name engraved on the compass face is “Queen and Co. Makers” “Philad.a.” The number 5477 also appears on the face. Height is 13 inches, and the diameter of the compass is about 5 inches. All bubble levels are intact and working, and the condition appears to be fine. There is a bit of wear to the silvered face of the vertical circle, but the numerals and increments are easily visible. The brass would polish beautifully, but we will leave it as-found, with wear to the paint on the supports. We have found no information about Queen and Company, but the workmanship is superb, and the piece is early. It comes with the hand-dovetailed box, which is rough, and could use refinishing. The reserve is very conservative when compared with examples we have seen from the period.Successful bidder to pay actual shipping and insurance cost. There is no charge for packaging, shipping materials, time, etc. We will waive the insurance for winning bidders who request via email that it be omitted. We prefer to ship via United States Postal System Priority Mail. In the event that is not feasible, we will find the best rate among the major shipping firms. Wisconsin bidders please add 5.5 percent sales tax unless you possess a current resale certificate. Will ship immediately upon receipt of payment, if by cashier’s check or money order. Will hold until personal check clears. Payment MUST be received within 10 days of close of auction. We will contact winning bidder promptly upon auction’s end with payment information. Please do not hesitate to email with any specific questions you may have. GOOD LUCK!

On Oct-01-00 at 13:12:34 PDT, seller added the following information:A gentleman emailed with some specific questions regarding the instrument, and we thought that the information would be of importance to other bidders. The cross hairs are intact and readily visible. The scope seems to be excellent optically, with no haze nor scratches that we can detect. It focuses properly.
The compass works well, with no binding nor restriction of any kind, and the mechanism to lock it in place functions perfectly. It turns smoothly, with no visible wear to the gears. We did notice that one of the pieces of curved glass that covers one of the dials is missing, but the brackets to hold it are present. The brackets have two holes for brass screws, but each bracket has only one centrally-located screw to hold the glass in place. There is a plumb bob that appears to be of the correct vintage included with the transit.
We have a couple of images of the base that we would be happy to email to anyone who inquires.
