Description

Surveying text known by Oldtimers as the Surveyor's Bible

The popular early-20th century surveying text Plane Surveying, A Text-Book and Pocket Manual by John Clayton Tracy was originally bound in black leather with gold lettering on the spine and all the page edges had gold colored gilt. It looked very much like the family Bible and was commonly called the Surveyors' Bible. Later printings, such as this one dated 1920, had the same appearance although the cover was changed to a flexible black cloth. The book was first published in 1907 and many later issues still show this initial date. The actual printing date for later editions is sometimes found in the lower left corner on the back side of the title page. The actual printing date does not always show and sometimes the only guide is by knowing the total amount printed according to date. By 1911 14,000 had been printed and by 1920 the total number issued was 45,000. Tracy's book was a good and very popular text of the period. In 1909 Tracy published a set of exercises to accompany the textbook. At first the exercises were published separately but later, as here, the two were often bound together. The goal of some collectors is to get copies of both text and exercises marked First Thousand. Those are rarely seen and a nice later copy such as this makes a good substitute. Size is 4.3" x 7.0" with 794 pages to the text and an additional 168 pages in the exercises. The book is in nice condition with no added writings.
