SCARCE NEW YORK SURVEY

Final Results of the Triangulation of the New York State Survey, Together with a Description of the Methods Employed, Also, the Eleventh Annual Report of the Commissioners of the State Survey, (Albany, 1887), 9.3” x 11.6”, leather binding with gilt pages, 214 pages, 7 folded map plates, 6 full-page instrument plates on heavy cardstock, complete with the interior appearing to be unused. Some mild darkening to paper and moderate scuffing to edges of leather exterior. The spine is imprinted in gold letters New York State Survey. $300

CHARLES DAVIES

Davies' Surveying was written for the Military Academy. It became the most popular school text and professional handbook during the mid-19th century. The U.S. General Land Office extracted information from Davies' text directly into its 1855 Manual of Surveying Instructions. The book was first published in 1830. There are six versions of the book with changing titles. These different versions appeared in 1830, 1835, 1841, 1851, 1870, and 1883. There were several intervening reprints.

BERGER, C.L. & SONS, Hand-Book and Illustrated Catalogue of the Engineers’ and Surveyors’ Instruments of Precision made by C.L. Berger & Sons, (Boston, 1907), 6” x 9”, 212 pages plus advertising, complete as to text which is in pretty decent shape and the cover boards are attached although badly deteriorated with creases and portions missing. This has all the information about Berger instruments but is considered a reader copy only. SOLD

HILGER & WATTS LIMITED, Watts Vernier and Micrometer Theodolites, Instructions for Use, Publication CS 3/2, (London, n.d., c. early 1950’s), 4.7” x 7.2”, 12 pages, green cardstock covers, together with a Hilger & Watts company letter dated July 25, 1955 to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture advising on the date of a particular vernier theodolite. The booklet has some visible folding and tearing damage plus tape residue but it complete to text. $10

LIETZ COMPANY, A., (San Francisco, 1919), edition not indicated but possibly the 13th, 6.2” x 9.2”, 612 pages with hundreds of illustrations of surveying and drafting instruments and tools. There is a 2” x 4” cutout on the page showing pantographs, otherwise text is in good condition. Front cloth cover has soiling and a few noticeable moisture spots. $SOLD

LIETZ - SOKKIA, The Lietz Catalog/The Sokkia Catalog, No. 109, (1991), 8.4” x 10.9”, cardstock cover with added extra half-cover to bring attention to the dual maker’s names. This catalog is unique in that it was published just as the company name changed from Lietz to Sokkia, hence the dual reference. Surveying and drafting instruments and accessories are pictured with various names including Lietz, Sokkisha, Sokkia, Tamaya, Rabone, Schonstedt, and others.SOLD

E.R. WATTS & SON, LTD., Watts Surveying and Engineering Instruments and Drawing Supplies, (London, c. 1927), 5.7” x 8.5”, 150 pages, brown cardstock covers. This is a great factory catalog from a major English maker of scientific instruments. It describes and contains illustrations of various types of surveying and engineering instruments, together with instructions for adjusting them. There are hundreds of illustrations and photographs, many of rarely seen specialized instruments. Included are illustrations of 23 different theodolites, baseline apparatus, mining instruments, 10 compasses, 14 varieties of levels including self-adjusting types, unique plummets, sextants, aneroid barometers, anemometers, current meters, heliograph, range finder, spectrometers, tapes, chains and more. The company dates to 1857 and continued until about the mid-20th century. In about 1946 they merged with Adam Hilger and James Swift & Son, thereafter doing business as Hilger & Watts Ltd. Good condition. The catalog is undated although it contains references to items patented in 1925 and contains an updated factory price notice of 1927. SOLD

U.S. COAST & GEODETIC SURVEY

EIMBECK, William, Report on the Measurement of the Salt Lake Base Line, (Washington, 1898), Appendix No. 12, Annual Report for 1897, U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey; 9.2" x 11.5", salmon-colored printed paper wrappers, 20 pages of text and diagrams plus 6 full-page photographic plates showing elements of the measurement, and one folding plate showing baseline plan and profile; this separately bound paper is inscribed on the cover, "With the Compliments of the Author" and then underneath in different handwriting appears the personal signature of the recipient, "George Davidson, Aug 22, 00." A number of pencil notations and corrections appear in the text, presumably in Davidson's hand and noting the similarity with other known examples of his notations. For a time Eimbeck worked under Davidson in the San Francisco office of the U.S. Coast Survey, then later performed the lion's share of theodolite observations for the transcontinental triangulation. Eimbeck also designed the highest form of baseline measuring when using metal rods. This Eimbeck/Davidson document is a classic, historic work in geodetic control surveying history. $110

JONES, E. LESTER, Elements of Chart Making, USC&GS Special Publication No. 38, (Washington, GPO, 1916), 6.0” x 9.2”, 15 pages of text plus numerous photographs and illustrative plates. This is a significant and valuable book for anyone involved in the old topographic and hydrographic surveys conducted by the U.S. Coast & Geodetic, particularly for someone who is involved in coastal boundary determination. A handy item to have for courtroom work on the subject. Good condition except the cardstock cover shows chipping and other damage along the outer spine, including the loss of some stitching. SOLD

DAGGETT, ELSWORTH, U.S. Surveyor General for Utah, Instructions to U.S. Deputy Mineral Surveyors and Circular to Claimants and Others for the District of Utah,, (Salt Lake City, 1890), 5.0” x 7.2”, two circulars in one binding. The instructions to mineral surveyors is 38 pages plus a folded map that has a 3” tear. The circular to claimants is 11 pages. This is an extremely rare item. Condition of the leather binding is poor with the front cover quite worn and scuffed and almost detached. The rear cover is comparatively good. Text is good although there is some moisture staining. SOLD

LITTLEHALES, G.W., The Methods and Results of the Survey of the West Coast of Lower California by the Officers of the U.S.S. "RANGER" during the Season of 1889 and 1890. (Washington, 1892), 6.1" x 9.2", 237 pages, this report covers the reconnaissance, main and secondary triangulation, instruments, hydrography, magnetic work, chronometers, determination of geographic positions, astronomic work for latitude and longitude, base measurement, tidal observations, and chart construction. Reports that cover the entire operation of coast chart surveying in one volume are rare. This book has numerous illustrations and folding maps in addition to 21 medium-resolution photographs showing instruments being used in the field surveying operations; the cover has scuffing and some cracking to the outer edges of binding, otherwise good condition. $60

U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Capt. A.A. HUMPHREYS & Lt. H.L. ABBOT, Report upon the Physics and Hydraulics of the Mississippi River, (Washington, 1876), Professional Papers of the Corps of Engineers No. 13, U.S. Corps of Topographical Engineers; this is a reprint with additions of an 1861 report; it contains detailed river surveys and presents a parabolic velocity curve; 691 pages plus 25 folding plates; 10.0" x 12.1"; bearing the signature of original owner George Davidson, May 30, 1881; Davidson was himself a noted scientist and an Assistant in the San Francisco office of the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey. Included with the report is an 8-page separately published article with printed wrappers by Humphreys and Abbot relating to the report titled, Reply to Criticisms made by Dr. Hagen, Director General of Public Works, Prussia, (New York, 1878), reprinted from Van Nostrand's Eclectic Engineering Magazine, January, 1878, also bearing Davidson's signature of the same date. This is one of the earlier editions of B&H that has the blue covers. This book was updated and revised over several decades and was one of the leading American texts of the 20th century. SOLD

JOHNSON, J.B., The Theory and Practice of Surveying, Designed for the Use of Surveyors and Engineers Generally but Especially for the Use of Students in Engineering, 16th ed. revised, (New York & London, 1902), 5.1” x 8.2”, 838 pages, this is one of the better surveying texts of the period although this copy is a bit loose and sort of beat up a bit although complete as to all text and plates and a good reader copy. $20

KIELY, EDMOND R., Surveying Instruments, Their History and Classroom Use, (New York, 1947), 6.2” x 9.3”, 411 pages, this is the original printing for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, no dust jacket, good condition noting the word Asmuth is written inside both front and back covers. This is a classic historical resource for the collector of surveying instruments and books. SOLD

LEWIS, OSCAR, George Davidson, Pioneer West Coast Scientist, (Berkeley & Los Angeles, 1954), 6.3” x 9.3”, 146 pages, good condition complete with dust jacket. A superb biography about one of the nation’s pioneer surveyors in the field of scientific measure and coastal mapping. SOLD

PEARSALL, RONALD, Collecting and Restoring Scientific Instruments, (New York, 1974), 5.9” x 8.9”, 278 pages, almost unused condition with illustrated dust jacket. This is the comprehensive work on the subject and contains much valuable information. SOLD

PHELPS, HARRY, Practical Marine Surveying, 1st ed., (New York & London, 1907), 6.1” x 9.2”, 217 pages, good condition noting it is ex-lib and shows evidence of removed envelopes and due-date papers inside both covers. This Annapolis textbook includes coverage on instruments, signals, planning, base-lines, triangulation, map projection, plotting, topography, soundings, records, leveling, tidal observations, astronomical work, magnetic observations and more. Much of the content has application to other surveying specialties. SOLD

TRACY, JOHN CLAYTON, Plane Surveying, A Text-Book and Pocket Manual, 1st ed., (New York & London, 1911), 4.3” x 7.1”, 794 pages. Tracy’s book used to be called the Surveyor’s Bible because of the soft black leather cover and gilt edge pages. This copy is ex-lib and has seen much usage with a corner of the front binding torn off and some mis-folding to an interior plate. The content is complete and it would make a good reference for a beginning collector. $8

There are two complete decks of playing cards and one deck is still sealed in the original cellophane. The other deck has a partial original cellophane wrapping although the cards still appear unused.
