Leybourn’s The Compleat Surveyor books were classics, published a number of times between 1653 to 1722. Each edition of the book was larger in content and substance and brought the work to a standard that exceeded most others of the time. George Washington apparently focused on Leybourn’s Compleat Surveyor as a young man studying the art of surveying.
The 1700 Leybourn is impressive - a massive book that dwarfs almost all other surveying textbooks. I took a pic of my bookshelf to put the 1722 Leybourn book in perspective. A 1700 Wing is on the bottom, with the 1722 Leybourn on top of it. The 1722 Leybourn is just slightly smaller than the 1700 Wing. If you collect surveying books, a 1722 Leybourn The Compleat Surveyor is a Must-Have book.
