Instrument Catalogues are an incredibly valuable asset to a surveying instrument collector. Back in the day, instrument catalogues were hard to find, and very expensive. You can now find many of these catalogues in PDF form (I have more than 160 instrument PDF's on my website for example), so the hardcopy catalogues are now much more affordable, although many collectors still prefer reading hardcopy catalogues. Rare catalogues, like the early editions of the Gurley Instrument Manuals, are still very desirable and expensive, however.
