From Leybourn's The Compleat Surveyor in 1722
HENRY WILSON, Surveying Improved: of, the Whole Art, both in theory and practice, fully demonstrated in four parts; Geodoesia Accurata; or, surveying made easy by the chain only; also, a new essay upon solids, (London, 1769). The sixth edition, with additions (hardback). 8vo (21cm by 13cm), [xii], 555pp. 11 folding charts, text illustrations. Contemporary full brown calf, 4 raised bands to spine, red morocco title label with gilt titling. Binding worn but intact (some rubbing and scuffing, some loss of leather to the rear board), lacks the front free endpaper, occasional light staining of the contents. Overall, this book is in fair to good condition.
First published in 1726 with 330 pages, this is a very comprehensive text and describes use of chains, surveying wheel, theodolite, circumferentor, semicircle, plain table and scales. Beginning in 1741 the later editions were supplemented and meaningfully expanded with information provided by William Hume.
In the 1995 to 2005 time frame, the 1762 and 1769 editions of Wilson's book sold in a range between $250 to $330.
