Fantastic Circa 1860s Draper Mining Transit

Rare Early Two Telescope Mining Transit

The Draper Mining Transit offered here (Serial Number 140) is a wonderful example of a very early and rare two telescope mining transit. The example offered here was previously owned by Robert Miller, who is the Solar Compass guru and the final authority on all things surveying made by Philadelphia based makers.

Either Edmund Draper or William Young invented the first mining transit around 1850. Nobody is sure who invented the mining transit, but Young and Draper are generally credited as the first to make mining transits.

The example offered here was made in the 1860s based on its serial number (140). This is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, mining transits to have survived the passage of time.

This transit is in fantastic condition, with only one small flaw. The screw that holds the bottom telescope focus knob went missing recently, and has not been found. The next owner can either find a replacement screw or have one made without much trouble I suspect.

Please review the 360 Spinner Views to see the quality and condition of this great instrument.
