This is a very nice top of the line auxiliary telescope that mounts on the sight vane of a Gurley Compass.
Gurley Auxiliary telescopes occasionally hit the market, but these telescopes are usually the entry level versions (smaller diameter and therefore less power). The upscale versions of the telescope (larger diameter and higher power) very infrequently hit the market.
The telescope offered here is the top of the line - the higher power scope with all the accessories - 3.5 inch vertical circle, level, and clamp and tangent to the vertical axis.
By way of comparison, according to the 1905 Gurley Catalogue (see pic below), the entry level auxiliary telescope cost $15. The higher power version cost $17. All the extras (3.5 inch vertical circle, level, and clamp and tangent to the vertical axis) cost another $15. So the telescope offered here was $32, or more than double the price of an entry level auxiliary scope at $15.
I've only seen a handful of completely decked out scopes like this one. This scope is a perfect way to dress up a Gurley Solar or Railroad Compass. Take a look at the last pic below to see how nicely this scope works with the Gurley RR Compass I have offered for sale.
The scope looks very nice buy has a few flaws. Fist, The level vial looks complete but doesn't have any liquid. I don't think the vial is original. The exposed glass appears unbroken so it doesn't detract from the overall appearance. Second, the optics are ok (slightly cloudy) but I don't see any crosshairs or stadia wires. Third, one of the screws is missing from the top of the scope as shown in the pic below.
