This is a beautiful compass in the Goldsmith Chandlee style.
It is believed that George Graves was apprenticed to Goldsmith Chandlee when Goldsmith passed away in 1821. Moreover, Graves bought a good deal of unfinished inventory and tools from Goldsmith's estate sale.
This compass is 14 inches long with a 5 inch needle.
The compass comes with the famous Goldsmith Chandlee L-T table. The compass has a wonderful patina.
I don't know if chain counter needle is original - it could be a replacement
A bit of brass is missing from the base of the South sight vane
All thumbscrews look original
Missing box and compass cover
This is clearly a beautiful compass. Goldsmith relied extensively on highly skilled apprentices to make most of his compass. George Graves was one of those apprentices.
I have more information and pictures of most of the known instruments made by Graves at my George Graves Maker Webpage.
