A nice Randolph compass formerly owned by a US Deputy Surveyor - George James. As reflected on the George James webpage, George likely used this compass when he was a young surveyor in Washington.
This appears to be an early version of the Randolph compass (serial number 1340). The Randolph patent associated with this compass is here.
This is a very nice but not perfect instrument. The glass is cracked, the eye sight peep hole piece is missing, and the key used to free up the compass needle is missing. The peep hole piece may or may not be easy to replace from scopes common to that time. The glass should be easily replaceable. An old clock key might work to free up the needle.
The knobs on the compass turn freely. The level vials have liquid.
The compass has a nice patina. The compass and case are in as-found condition. Please examine the pictures carefully and ask questions. I can also take more pictures if necessary.
Included in the sale is the very cool Randolph compass envelop with a post office stamped date in 1881. The perfect addition to a display featuring the Randolph compass.
