This is a nice Pocket Vernier Compass that comes with its original box.
Based on the label inside the box the compass was likely made in the mid-1880s. Gurley's 1886 catalogue shows an earlier version of the pocket compass, however, while the 1887 catalogue shows this version. The catalogues typically ran behind actual production, so it is very possible that this compass was made in 1885 or 1886 (which would be consistent with the paper label inside the box).
The telescope is 9 inches long, and has a sharp focus but no crosshairs. This early Gurley Pocket Vernier compass includes a full vertical circle, which Gurley included for an additional cost when new.
The needle is about 4.5 inches long. Level vials are good. I also see some evidence of chemical cleaning on the brass - see pic of the sight vane hinge below, for example. I don't see any obvious scratch marks or buffing, fortunately.

The vernier works but the clamps doesn’t seem to hold completely.
I have a good deal of information about Gurley, including some production information, posted on my Gurley Maker Webpage.
