This is a very nice Heller & Brightly Transit (serial number 6725) that was made circa 1893.
This is a substantial full size transit. Many surveying instrument collectors consider Heller & Brightly to be one of the top instruments makers in the 4th quarter of the 19th century. You will likely feel the same way after you play with this transit for a few minutes.
The compass face on this transit has a beautiful scallop type look. I really like the look, but had a hard time capturing the look in the pictures I took. The scallops don't stand out as much on the dark compass face.
According to Heller & Brightly sales records, Otto Schroll of Wheeling West Virginia was the original purchaser of this transit. A graduate of Ohio State University with a degree in Civil Engineering, Mr. Schroll had a long career in railroading based on my review of internet sources and newspaper articles. I posted a few things below.
Everything works on this transit, and everything I have for the transit is included in the pics. Issues worth noting - one of the level vials is cracked and doesn't hold liquid, a sunshade for one of the verniers is missing, and the sunshade for the telescope is bent on one side (probably fixable).
